Review: Perfume- The story of a murderer

“Perfume- The story of a murderer” is a movie where its drama is based in the novel, of the same name, written by Patrick Sûskind. This film is directed by the German director Tom Tykwer and produced by Bernd Eichinger, in 2006, in Germany, France and Spain.

The movie, Perfume, takes place in France in the 18th century. It is a parable of a man called Jean-Baptiste Grenoille (Ben Whishaw) who doesn’t have his own smells but at the same time who is able to smell, perceive and recognize any smell, no matter the distance or how faint. Jean grows up in a hostile environment of an orphanage. Nobody want him although it is something different on him. When he is big enough the owner of the orphanage take him to work in a sort of leather factory in a subhuman life, but he survives. However, at the age of 20 he get a work with the perfumer Guiseppe Baldini (Dustin Hoffman), who taught him to distil essences, in Paris France, but using that technique he couldn’t distil all the essences like the copper, the glass, but especially of certain women, his obsession from now. But in Grasse he could do that, learn the art of enfleurage. Once there he could get his target: a magnificent perfume which ingredient is the essence of young girls.

In my opinion this is a very good film which its music transported me to that period of time. This movie made me feel hypnotized, glad, but confused at the same time, trying to understand the thoughts of the main character, whose gift of smell help to create a delighted and enchanted atmosphere to the film. This is one of those movies which you don’t see very often. Special effects and make up also are two important things because are the details which make me feel how truly actors´ odor are.
